Devanāgarī is the script of the Sanskrit language, and it translates to “divine city” or “the city of the Gods”. It is the script used to document ancient India's knowledge.
In this module, you will learn how to write and read in Devanāgarī, as well as the alphabet's structure. The systematics of the Devanāgarī alphabet is one of the greatest legacies of ancient Indian society. Additionally, the course will cover the history of the formation of the alphabet in the Purāas and the history of the Sanskrit language.

The teacher of this course, Anja Prem Vukadin is an assistant professor at the University of Vienna, currently working on her Ph.D. She graduated from the University of Vienna with a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Modern South Asian Studies. Her second Master's degree (University of Vienna) is in Languages and Cultures of South Asia, focusing on Classical and Medieval Sanskrit philosophies. Prem is also a Yoga teacher in Yoga in Daily Life Austria and a Dancer of classical Indian dance Bhāratanāyam at the Indian Dance Academy.
